In the 1881 census Henry was living alone, Sophia and the youngest child were living in the workhouse, Joseph and John were at an Industrial School (schools formed to provide education for orphans and the poorest children) and Alice at the age of 14 a nurse in a household in Widnes. By 1891 Sophia was back with Henry as were Joseph, John and Alice.
